Proposal: Sex and Intimacy

If you search teh interwebz for my username 'Carpetsmoker', stackoverflow is the first hit (on DuckDuckGo anyway). If you do the same for my real name, SO doesn't come up as the first hit, but does come up pretty fast.

I am not particularly shy or ashamed about my sex life, but I also don't want all question on the subject to be open for everyone within an internet search and 2 clicks; so I might wish to post one or two 'anonymous' questions.

I don't care about that happens with reputation, by the way.

With the new profile-page design, one of the new features that was added was the ability to hide certain communities from your public profile.

On the new profile, click the 'Edit List' link under the 'Communities' section:

edit list button

You can then select which communities to hide/unhide from public view:

hide communities page

Whilst it's not foolproof (see the quote below), it does help to allay some of your fears.

Choose which communities will appear in the Communities and Top Network Posts sections of your profile

Hiding a community means other users will not see it in your Communities list and Top Network Posts. It does not, however, mean your activity here is completely private. Moderators and Stack Exchange employees can see your list of hidden communities. Other people may also be able to associate your presence on those communities with your public list in certain cases (via the API, for example).

New sites that you join will be linked to your other communities by default.

The solution is simple: don't post as Mr Carpetsmoker, but use some pseudonyme.

As long as nobody can associate your pseudonyme with your real name, your privacy would be fine.

True, worth to mention it's better to use a different browser for the other account and have no interaction whatsoever between the accounts otherwise they might auto merge. Feb 4, 2015 at 13:26

I've thought of this, of course ;-) But it's not very convenient... It's also prone too mistakes (where you forget to sign in as the correct user). Feb 8, 2015 at 22:12

@Carpetsmoker, That's actually one reason why many people use Quora. You can post anonymously.
