Right at the moment, the Philosophy site is set to go into public beta in 25 minutes. But according to its meta, the site is not ready for the next step. I assume the site won't go public automatically, but the countdown timer is automated. Hence the confusion.

Am I correct?

Update: It seems I was and therefore I would consider the automated timer to be a bug. Perhaps a description similar to the answer to this question on the page near the timer would be a sufficient fix. (If nothing else, it suggests a level of precision in timing that does not exist.)

The Area 51 Philosophy page says:

The site's Public Beta will begin soon.

The countdown timer itself may be automated, but it isn't tied to anything—for every now-public beta, someone made the call to move it from private to public.

In this particular case (as described in the site's meta, for those who can get there), it's taking a little longer to get consensus on "what is/isn't this site about?" But then, what else would you expect from a site on Philosophy?

  • I wouldn't be bothered by it except that at least one person assumed that the site would go public automatically. It seems like a launch timer with no built-in holds. Jun 15, 2011 at 17:16
  • it isn't tied to anything -- I got my 50 rep for following through on the commitment, so it's tied to something, even if it's not public yet. It does appear to be public, though -- I can view it when I'm not signed in. Jun 15, 2011 at 20:19
