Proposal: Economics

What is the likelihood that we can get LaTeX enabled for the Economics Stack Exchange beta (as it is on the TeX SE, Math SE, and others)? Does anyone with a better knowledge of how the SE network works know what the process might be for arranging this?

The discussion here does not seem to give automatic cause for optimism. However, I think that LaTeX support will be crucial if the economics SE is to succeed. Open virtually any economics journal and you will see that the language of modern economics is mathematics. Research active academic economists like myself--the so-called "experts" that a Stack Exchange site is supposed to attract--are going to expect to be able to ask and answer questions with a certain degree of mathematical sophistication if they are to find the site useful. I do not see us being able to retain such users in any significant number if they are not given the tools to properly articulate their needs and ideas.

  • I fear we'll have to wait until Beta to petition the powers for it... Does anyone else know? Nov 2, 2014 at 4:13
  • Yes, administrative issues such as this are more suited to the people actually building the site once it is launched. Nov 2, 2014 at 16:29
