Proposal: Woodworking

How is it possible there's enough interest to field such stack exchange categories as "Amateur Radio" and "Biblical Hermeneutics" but we don't yet have a Woodworking community? It's a 7000 year old trade, it takes a lifetime to become a true master of the finer points, and everybody with a garage occasionally has to dip a toe into the warm waters of working wood. What will it take to get this thing to the next level? What's the next step? And above all what can we all do to help?

  • We have a good pace going as it is. I think it'll only be a few weeks before we reach 40 questions with a score of 10 and then we'll be on to the next step.

  • I was getting the impression by some of the other comments and threads that this thing had totally stalled out. Then there's some lady trying to co-opt woodworking into an arts and crafts community. I guess I let my enthusiasm for this idea get the better of me. Apparently given the -2 and your less than friendly comment I should have kept it to myself. Should I delete this thread for the greater good?

  • You can leave the discussion open; it's always likely there are quieter viewers that are thinking the same thing, and they will benefit from the topic. I meant for my comment to be more optimistic than unfriendly, sorry it was interpreted that way.

  • No worries, I guess the -2 left me a little raw. I don't think I've ever got a down vote before, it stings! I am totally stoked about starting this community, thank you for taking the initiative. You know now that I think about it, I might change my tag line to something more engaging, it is a little abrupt.

  • I for instance found this rather recently and have contributed a few questions that are at +10. As more people flow in there will be more people to contribute actively. Until we have a strong base of those people, the beta (if it made it) would fail. Don't be discouraged!

    As questions need to have +10 to count, it might be useful if people who have votes on question with more than +10 removed the votes to re-use them on the questions that haven't yet reached +10.

  • That is a great suggestion. I've also given thought to promoting the sight when I answer a woodworking related question on the home improvement site like "if you enjoyed this answer, please check out the Woodworking proposal in Area 51!" is that appropriate?

  • @MaximeMorin I doubt anyone has approached the major online voices. I hesitated reaching out to people outside the Stack Exchange network until reaching the beta launch because "Following" and "Committing" to proposals may seem confusing and pointless to those unfamiliar with how things work here. I'm open to dissenting opinions though..

  • Hmmm, I see your point drs. When the time comes I'd volunteer to help but this is your baby so I understand if you want to handle it yourself. When(if) you do reach out you should hit up Frank Howarth and the Wood Whisperer, those guys draw some serious water in the world of Youtube and they seem pretty approachable.

  • I have tried posting information about this proposal, but most sites take it down immediately. Presumably they are afraid it will infringe on their own forum traffic. Though I think it is completely different from a normal forum. Maybe other more respected people can post to other forums and have better luck than me!

Some of the discussions about how to promote the Woodworking proposal are from several months ago. Ever since the community ads on diy.SE went live, the proposal got a big boost in followers and upvotes. A good way of tracking the momentum of a proposal is by checking out the "followers" graph on the proposal definition:

As I said in my comment, I think we're on track and it won't be long now. That being said, the best thing you can do is to keep spreading the word, especially to those that aren't in the stack exchange network yet.

  • Do you still think we are on track? We have less than a month left. We just went from 4 questions with 10+ to 9.

  • @MaximeMorin I think someone just rearranged their votes so that it requires fewer people to reach 10 votes on the last questions.
