Proposal: Mathematics Learning, Studying, and Education

There have been several possible different names proposed in this question, to replace "Mathematics Learning, Studying, and Education".

My questions here are more meta:

  1. How do we actually go about changing the name? Does someone (perhaps Jacquelyn Li) have this power?

  2. What procedure should we actually use to pick a name?

For (2), one possible answer would be to start a new discussion with a "one name per post" rule, and see which name gets the most upvotes.

  • For 2, I would not do simple voting now, certainly not before some more discussion. Actually I think first the scope and target audience should be clearer, before an actual name is fixed.

  • @quid What would you think of having a vote at this point? The discussion in both Alternative Names and What should be the final target audience of Mathematics LSE? seems to have petered out. I imagine the vote would stay open for a while, so further discussion would still be possible.

  • I think it was very good idea to collect the suggestions, as you did, and also I like that you commented on all of them. I think this is better to get an understanding of what people actually want and mean, than to vote at this moment (or at all). (Also what voting system? This is not completely irrelevant with that many suggestions, some of them very similar.) Why not do another discussion thread. Question: the suggestions, and an answer should discuss all of them (the first one could be yours) or at least provide some reasoning for why they do not want a particular suggestion.

  • I think after that we will have narroewed down the options and have a better understanding. Then we might do a vote regarding finer details. To get perhaps better across what I mean: I think to decide if we have Math Teaching and Pedagogy or Math Pedagogy and Teaching a vote is good, but to decide of we have learning in the title or not, is better discussed as it is more complex a question. (If you want I can create that thread I suggest.)

  • @quid Yes, go ahead. I'm going to post another thread about rules for the vote.

  • I posted the question. Perhaps you would like to copy over your discussion of (your) list as an answer (I only added one minor variation to the list, the final one, so you can really essentially just copy it).
