Proposal: Stack Overflow (in Portuguese)

As far as I know, all current sites that allow for languages other than English have a meta site where English is required, so community managers can understand the discussions.

Will this site follow the same model? Since it will be used for testing the new localized platform, I believe the SE staff will be interested in monitoring the site closely (and only one employee speaks Portuguese). On the other hand, a meta site in Portuguese would be beneficial for the community at large. Allowing both languages sounds like a mess.

Is there any decision on this already?

This will be a Portuguese only site. No English would be allowed in much the same way we expect our English sites to be conducted in English (save our foreign language learning sites).

Nice! I just wonder how the SE team will be able to monitor the site. Looks like Gabe is gonna have a lot of work! :-)

  • @bfavaretto You know that healthy SE sites have a great community and good moderators. Gabe is not alone. Probably he will be a bridge between community and staff.

  • @bigown I mean monitoring as in actually participating in meta discussions, especially because this is a new model of site they're experimenting with. I believe having the meta site in pt is the right move, however it would be nice to also be able to hear people from the SE staff who can't speak Portuguese. Perhaps we could have some relevant discussions about the site in meta.SE/SO too.

  • @bfavaretto Sure. This is the way to go. SE staff made the right thing.

  • Foreign language learning sites? The only one I know of is English Language Learners, and it's monolingual. There are several more or less bilingual foreign language sites, but that's different. So, does this sudden activity around SO_pt mean that something is finally happening around the localization front? Nov 27, 2013 at 0:20
  • @Gilles Yes, private beta should start in the upcoming weeks, according to the announcement emailed to this proposal's followers. So the localized engine localization is near ready.

  • But not necessarily the actual localization. AFAIK just Portuguese is ready.
