Proposal: Astronomy

Make the case, should we allow spaceflight into this site? Include manned and unmanned into the discussion.

As long as it doesn't belong on another stack (like physics), why not allow both manned and unmanned?

In general I would think that Spacefligt should be included here since it's a focal point for future Astronomical advancement. Many visitors would floc-in just by that topic and then get involved in more Astronomy. This would in general rise the awareness of the general public on topics of Astronomy and Space Science.

  • A lot of spaceflight is not really about astronomical advancement. The current focus of the US human space program (which is around half of NASA's budget) is the ISS, which (with a few exceptions) is not really about astronomy. It's fine for spaceflight to be on topic, but I don't think it necessarily leads to astronomy.

  • Naturally, everything has its balance, but learning about spaceflight always promotes the drive to learn more on the "go where no-one gone before" note. May 30, 2011 at 16:58

Spaceflight does not come under Astronomy - but I do find it an extremely exciting topic and I'm sure there would be plenty of questions related to it. With that said, I would welcome spaceflight questions.

It perhaps is worth pondering, if they are not allowed here, where would one ask spaceflight oriented questions?

In the Space Exploration proposal! (Space Exploration site when it launches (no pun intended).) Mar 30, 2011 at 16:12

If the dedicated space exploration site comes into fruition, then it should be off-topic in astronomy. Mar 30, 2011 at 16:25
