I originally proposed 'Business intelligence' because it tends to fall into some of the cracks between SO, SF and SU. Getting obscure business intelligence questions answered on Stackoverflow seems to be a quite hit and miss.

A while ago, I saw a SE proposal for an 'Enterprise Systems' site that might be a reasonable fit for business intelligence.

Question:

Folks, I think the subject matter for this site isn't well supported by SO, SF and SU, but the lukewarm support suggests that the site might be a bit narrow. What is your opinion on attempting to merge this with some other SE site?

Proposal: Business Intelligence

I think it's far from a narrower field, I think it's more due to the intersection of people who know about the stack exchange network and those who operate in BI teams/environments.

  • Could be. I tend to find that it doesn't really do a very good job on more esoteric BI questions. For example, trying to ask anything that requires in-depth knowledge of SSAS tends to be quite hit and miss. Commented May 13, 2011 at 11:15
  • This is definitely part of it. I only recently learned myself that SO has a DBA site, and I've been an off-and-on lurker of the site for quite a while. And it was the existence of the DBA site that finally spurred me to join and start posting/voting on the various sites. Increasing the number of humans/records in this INTERSECT query would definitely help. :) Commented Dec 19, 2011 at 16:06

I think merging with a site such as Managers and Leaders or Enterprise IT would create a pool that is too heterogeneous to be useful. One on hand you'd have people asking questions like "What sort of KPIs should I be tracking for my small-job manufacturing business" and on the other you'd have us fielding questions like "When I pass this tuple to my MDX query I get an error -80051...what's wrong?" You'd be muddling the developers and the consumers in a way that would ultimately be not entirely hospitable to either.

I much prefer the more recent proposal from ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells to merge with the DBA.se community. That's more of a green apples with red apples merger instead of apples with papayas.

Two possible solutions would be a) better promotion of this proposal among developers, users, etc. of BI tools; and b) merging with another site/proposal such as Managers and Leaders.
