Proposal: Mechanical Engineering

I think it's a good policy to shut idle proposals down after a year, but this particular proposal was gaining adherents throughout September. I think the issue was perhaps more with users new to Area 51 not being aware they needed to vote rather than a lack of interest.

Could the proposal be given a "stay" for a month?

  • With two questions at 9, one at 7, and two more at 5, it really wasn't as if we needed 5 full questions to make their way through the ranks, either. – jonsca Oct 10 '13 at 7:26
  • I'm sorry, but I can't do that. The 1-year time frame we established is really conservative; it's actually way longer than it probably should be. You really don't want to continue building on a proposal that has already gone beyond even that. It's time to try again. – Robert Cartaino Oct 10 '13 at 13:23
  • @RobertCartaino I think you're ignoring a lot of the key stats when you claim that was just being "propped up". It was only a week over a year's time. – jonsca Oct 10 '13 at 13:27
  • I picked a different word. It's still been over a year and this proposal is still in Definition. It is simply too long to continue with this iteration. Every ounce of our experience has shown that, even if we launched a site from a slow-growing proposal that finally accrues enough users, it will not result in a strong site. There's nothing wrong with the subject; a Mechanical Engineering site makes sense. But this one simply took too long. – Robert Cartaino Oct 10 '13 at 13:35
  • @RobertCartaino I think this needs more eyes than just those here in Discuss.A51. I have posted about it on MSO: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/200251/… – jonsca Oct 10 '13 at 13:46
