Proposal: Amateur Radio

Will this community answer questions about SDR too or is this aimed purely at analog amateur radio?

  • What do you mean by "Software Defined Radio"? Are there programs I can install on my laptop that will let me transmit on the 2 meter band?

There are some projects (hardware) for transmitting for example BladeRf. I have only used two dongles for receiving, they have about 2MHz bandwith and frequency range of ~50MHz - 2GHz, using rtl-sdr.

  • So, in theory, yes. Yes there are. But you need the RF hardware, which you can build or buy.

Why not? A major factor in deciding to get my amateur radio license was wanting to experiment with SDR.

That said, many or most SDR questions would be better asked on electronics.se. Much of how SDR works is a standard part of electrical engineering curricula, so you're likely to find plenty of people able to answer deep technical questions. SDR has many applications outside amateur radio, so asking there also means that the questions and answers can help a broader audience.
