Proposal: Operating Systems

Almost all the questions in this proposal are programming questions, off-topic of Super User, but on-topic for Stack Overflow.

This site has nothing to do with SU, but it does have trouble differentiating itself from SO. There are precedents for sites carving out a topic with significant overlap with SO, such as Database Administrators and Game Development. But the OS development proposals (this isn't the first one) seem to be subsets.

My day job is to develop embedded software including an operating system. I find the Embedded systems proposal relevant, because it covers a lot of topics that SO doesn't, but I'm struggling to find a use for a separate site about OS development.

While it may be a subset technically, OS dev is a big enough, complicated enough and overlooked on SO enough to merit it's own proposal. – Linuxios Jan 6 '14 at 21:23
  • @Linuxios I don't think OS development is a topic sui generis with its own concerns that would make a coherent site (unlike, say, game development or embedded development). Why do you think it is? – Gilles 'SO- stop being evil' Jan 6 '14 at 21:31

It seems to me that OS dev has very unique concerns: setting up C/C++ environments, handling memory at a layer unknown in any other kind of programming, and an immense level of complexity. – Linuxios Jan 6 '14 at 21:40
