Proposal: Aviation

Other discussions are indicating that 'science' may not be the correct tag for this site. What should it be tagged with?

  • Good idea to shell that question out to the whole community.

My feeling is that of the available tags, Professional is the best fitting. I think it is possible to have more than a single tag attached to an proposal, so I suggest adding Recreational as well.

That would indicate that both professional and recreational aviators are equally welcome.

I think Recreation would be the best place for it. Professionals can easily, and frequently do, join recreational groups related to their profession, but if we labeled it as Professional then it would cut off a huge potential audience, and I think that would kill the site before it even gets off the ground.

If you can do multiple tags, then I'd do Recreation, Professional, and Technology.

I think that the biggest value of the site will be if we attract professionals. If we can do multiple tags, then the three that you suggest would be the same as mine. Not sure if we can or not though.

Being tagged as Recreation will attract professionals. Being tagged as Professional will turn away people who aren't professionals, and they are a much bigger percentage of the potential audience. I frequent a number of aviation forums that are not "professional", I only visit two that are "professional" and both of those are directly related to the company I work for.

  • Well, I don't think that a site tagged Professional is only for people considered professionals. Aviation is a professional occupation however, so I do think that the tag is appropriate. It should not turn away those who are not. On the other hand, as a professional pilot, I would be turned away from yet another site that targets the general public instead of the topics that will have the most value to me.

I run a LinkedIn group called Aviation Professionals. It has over 114,000 members in it at the moment and growing by 150-200 members per day

The word professional attracts people, no question. A lot of the input is generated by people joining the group because they want access to professionals to discuss career changes, ask technicnal questions, etc

A recreational tag will attract some professionals, but it is more likely that a professionals tag will attract a lot of people who are not professional and want access to a professional source of information, thus increasing membership numbers, question quality, etc
