I would like to open a discussion on the scope of the Artificial Intelligence proposal. In the last Machine Learning proposal there was some confusion about the scope we wanted, and it never really got resolved. Instead of putting it off until later, I think it would be beneficial to define the scope from the start.

Scope

This Q&A is for the theory, system design and analysis of intelligent machines and software.

On-topic Questions

  • a specific AI problem
  • an AI algorithm
  • use of software tools commonly used by AI professionals
  • practical, answerable problems that are unique to the AI profession

Questions to avoid:

  • every answer is equally valid: “What’s your favorite ______?”
  • your answer is provided along with the question, and you expect more answers: “I use ______ for ______, what do you use?”
  • there is no actual problem to be solved: “I’m curious if other people feel like I do.”
  • you are asking an open-ended, hypothetical question: “What if ______ happened?”
  • your question is just a rant in disguise: “______ sucks, am I right?”

The above is just a tentative definition in reference to other SE sites. I think everyone would agree on the above since its pretty basic. Make an answer for anything that should be added or deleted, and we will vote on it.

@kenorb, you didn't correct the link. This discussion was about an older proposal, not the current one. You should not change posts about other proposals to look as if they are about another one. If you want a discussion about the issue you should start a new one and just link to this.

  • Agreeing with Kaveh very much. This is quite confusing. I was starting to comment and answer questions that may just be pure waste of time. Yet, thanks @kenorb for digging up these interesting threads. Opportunities to learn better from the past. Jun 30, 2016 at 8:51
  • Btw. new AI site launched.

I honestly think the scope of this group should meet that of AAAI

  • AI Overview
  • Applications
  • Cognitive Science
  • Ethics & Social Issues
  • Games & Puzzles
  • History
  • Interfaces
  • Machine Learning (although here is overlap with Cross-Validated)
  • Natural Language
  • Philosophy
  • Representation & Reasoning
  • Robots (although Robotics SE exists)
  • Speech
  • Systems & Languages
  • Vision (although here are many image-processing tags in Stackoverflow)
  • Web & AI

As far as Topics that may be covered by other forums like the ones listed. Questions in these topics should be states as AI-based application

Possibly something like this: How do I apply edge detection to an image to make it more clear to see what directions my robot can go, I'm trying to design path planning algorithm for autonomous mobile robot.

  • I think all but a couple of these could have useful questions. The history and ethics categories stand out to me as outsiders. Aug 21, 2013 at 11:28
  • I'm going to support history. You must've noticed how even in electronics.stackexchange we have questions in that topic like how were the first microprocessors made, how were they programmed back then. Same thing can be applied here.

  • I think those kinds of questions are useful because they are still about electronics design. In my opinion, questions with historical/ethical/social components are okay as long as they are at the core related to theory, design or analysis. The thing about historical/ethical/social topics is that they are so broad that we can't just give them a blank check of approval. Aug 22, 2013 at 2:05

  • Machine learning question (all kinds of neural networks and some more technical algorithms (non-neural))

  • I think this is implicitly specified as within the scope, and perhaps the major component of the example questions so far. Should it be made more explicit? Aug 1, 2013 at 2:47
  • just do it, its etter that way imho
