Proposal: Tor - online anonymity, privacy, and security

It is meant to be spelled Tor, rather than TOR. [x]

Will questions (and answers) be edited to reflect this "fact"?

Is the community supposed to edit/educate that it is Tor, not TOR?

Replacing it could be felt like (invasive) paternalism.

This will be a good post to bring up on meta when the site makes it to beta. We could discuss it here, but it wouldn't have much consequence. – JohnB Jul 3 '13 at 23:00

Its good that you brought this up, however, Area 51 is not the right place to discuss very specific site policies. It would be better to hold this off till private beta starts.

Still, to answer your questions :

Will questions (and answers) be edited to reflect this "fact"?

Yes, they certainly should be. Stack Exchange is a network of (mostly) professional sites and using the correct terminology and names is critical to that. In the cases where the OP may be unaware, other users should educate the OP about the correct name and then edit the post.

Is the community supposed to edit/educate that it is Tor, not TOR?

Most certainly, yes. Some users at the receiving end may consider this to be offensive or snobbish, but the simple fact of the matter is, quality matters over everything else. Quality should not be compromised over the childishness of specific users* (if that is how they choose to react to well-intentioned input).

*And, the sad part is, that it happens more frequently than you would imagine.

  • Example question edits don't result in user pings, so it's relatively easy to edit and correct such errors, fortunately. :) – jmort253 Jul 4 '13 at 6:41
