Proposal: Amateur Radio

Viewing the nice committers graph to the right, its beautiful exponential shape reminded me of a capacitor charging to the full available potential. It looks like marketing can still learn something from electronics and vice versa.

With the technical understanding we all share here, we should not expect another hike in committer numbers unless we apply more potential by reaching out.

We all should start to reach out by submitting little press releases about amateur radio on Stack Exchange to our national and local amateur radio magazines and club web sites. Only by doing so, will we draw in new committers.

Personally, I contacted the ARRL QST editors, CQ Magazine, my local club and the Belgian and Dutch national club journals.

Who will join in doing what where?

I highly suggest that you don't try to get the new users of Stack Exchange here yet, try to target Stack Exchange users first. A magazine publication would be great when we hit beta, but not so good right now, people will just sign up and forget about it. Although I must say, this site is doing remarkably well so far, the commitment phase is moving right along:-)

"47/100 committers with 200+ rep on any other site" - seems like we'll need to find more people who are already active on Stack Exchange sites, most of the people who can be found from elsewhere in the amateur radio community are not. Other committers will be necessary to get the site started up when it's in the beta stage.

Here are pre-print manuscripts of press releases. Provided you include an attribution to my name, you are free to use them in whatever way or translate them.

I would be very interested in French and German translations of the briefs.

Copied the English brief proudly on my channels, resulting in a little bump in the graph. Thanks!

  • I have now added HTML versions of the Briefs which are easier to send as a HTML e-mail message. Jun 26, 2013 at 17:04
  • @oh7lzb I saw that bump! We need more of those bumps. Anyone? Jun 29, 2013 at 16:53
  • Very good work. Is it possible someway to send this to all committed users and urge them to spread the word?

For the ARRL members among us, the announcement was published as a "Stray" on p.89 of the September 2013 issue of QST. Aug 14, 2013 at 13:51
  • @on4aa: You beat me to it, I noticed that today in the printed version;-) Aug 15, 2013 at 22:13

Another thing that we should try is posting on the ORZ forums.

I have shared this proposal on S5 ham radio forum, hope somebody gets here :)

I posted on Google+ about it. There's also an amateur radio community on G+ someone could post to. We could ask the folks on ##hamradio on freenode..

I agree though, we need to tell more people!
