Proposal: SharePoint Overflow

Expanding on: SharePoint Overflow: Is this site broad enough?

We currently have two sites, StackOverflow and SharePoint Overflow. We know the scope of SO is programming related questions, but I think the decision (from the question above) is that SharePoint Overflow could also include development related questions.

I can think of a couple options:

  • Post code related questions on SO and everything else on SharePoint Overflow
  • All questions that would be tagged with SharePoint should be posted on SharePoint Overflow
  • Duplicate your question on both sites (some of this is currently happening today: example on SO and on SharePointOverflow)

How do you choose where to post a SharePoint related question?

I think anything to do with SharePoint should be posted in SharePoint Overflow.

The reason being that development for SharePoint is NOT just standard ASP.NET development (though sometimes you can use standard ASP.NET stuff like user controls, etc.).

There are a lot of gotchas with using the SharePoint object model, and only those who have had extensive experience with the system can correctly and accurately answer questions target to development in SharePoint.

    judging from what these say: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/78452/…, meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/6378/…, migrated questions lose rep on both the old and new site

  • @djeeg After some time, questions can no longer be migrated. If you want to migrate questions from SO, they need to be relatively new questions. Also, questions can't be migrated to beta sites, so you would need to wait for the site to be launched.

  • Suggest minor logic edit to first line. As already James points out in sentence 2, general .NET questions would not belong, however technically this conflicts with the first sentence since general .NET questions still have something to do with SharePoint. "anything to do with SharePoint should be posted in SPO" -> "anything specifically to do with SharePoint should be posted in SPO"

We're going to have a similar issue with the wiki proposal if that goes live. I suggest you default put all SharePoint questions on the new SharePoint site and only repost on Stack Overflow if they are generic programming issues that don't get answered.

I'd concur with the answers given, my standpoint is from a Testing/Implementation/Release perspective where I don't handle the coding to make the site live but I work on Testing and Releasing the code to various environments. Sometimes issues I deal with are not just feature or implementation related but sometimes require coding or debugging to understand, having one place to put questions can mitigate questions on where I might not be sure where a question may lead.
