I received 1 points for joining and 50 points for registering my email, but I still can't post. 51 points show up in the top bar on the main page, but when I go to post, the top bar says I only have 1 point, and "You must have at least 5 reputation on Area 51 to ask a question."

From the Area 51 FAQ:

You'll earn your first 50 reputation by confirming your email address. This allows you to create proposals and example questions. (Emphasis added)

This is hard to reconcile with the statement:

You must have at least 5 reputation on Area 51 to ask a question. (Emphasis added)

As in the accepted answer below -- it apparently takes time for the reputation to propagate, but wouldn't it be useful in that case to document this fact in the FAQ, so that more people don't end up getting confused like I did?

Yay 51 points already

oh but wait, just 1?

This question came from our discussion, support, and feature requests site for meta-discussion of the Stack Exchange family of Q&A websites.

  • Ironically, this very question belongs in the Area 51 Discussion Zone. I'll flag for a moderator to migrate it for you. – Pops Apr 10 '13 at 21:32
  • hmm you should get 51 rep points while joining Area51 because the name suggest it... strange... – FolksLord Apr 14 '13 at 20:55

You are looking at two different accounts:

The Area 51 dissussion site is the 'meta' site for Area 51, see the Area 51 discuss FAQ. Your reputation there is entirely derived from the main site, but the reputation is synched once an hour or so. Just wait a little while and you'll have 51 points in both places.

  • Seems like a slightly questionable design in a couple ways - but thanks for the answer that clarifies! – Joe Corneli Apr 10 '13 at 21:36
  • All per-site metas apart from this one operate that way. – Martijn Pieters Apr 10 '13 at 21:37

yes but other sites apart from that one say "meta" not "discuss". – Joe Corneli Apr 10 '13 at 21:40
