Proposal: Anime & Manga

The description for the proposed Anime & Manga SE states "Proposed Q&A site for anime fans, otakus, cosplayers, doujin producers, etc."

Right now, the only sample question related to cosplay is "I plan to cosplay as Inuyasha. Should I color my long hair white or just tie it up and wear a wig on top? Any pros and cons?" and this has only 2 votes. There are also a lot of comments on it about whether or not this question should be disallowed, mostly because it is too subjective.

But what kind of cosplay questions wouldn't be subjective? Asking "Does my cosplay look good?" is obviously subjective and probably not a useful question for anybody besides the asker. I can't really think of any cosplay-related questions that wouldn't be subjective.

Subjective isn't necessarily bad. You'll also notice in there is a criteria that is perfect for cosplay.

  1. Great subjective questions invite sharing experiences over opinions.

This is something that is very easy to do with cosplay while still having good questions. I'm not saying we won't get stinker questions like the 'Does this look good?' but hopefully we will also get many good questions.

Update

A good example question might be something along the lines of:

What are materials that could be used to recreate the outfit from Gantz while still being good for beginning costume makers?

This is directly related to cosplay, and would be perfect for an anecdotal story like

I started making a costume with ___ material, but was unable to use it because of ___. However I found ___ and it was good to work with. Here are some resources for getting it and working with it.

I'm coming up with this off the top of my head, and I don't actually cosplay, so I'm not sure I have the best example question, but hopefully it would get at the right idea.

This doesn't answer my original question though. Can you think of any cosplay questions that wouldn't be too subjective? I don't see much of a difference between "Does this cosplay look good?" and "Do you think my hand-made version of this character's accessory is well made?" Not only are they really only helpful questions to the person asking, but in most cases they are too subjective.

  • Updated with a sample question. I can try and come up with another if you need it, but as I stated in my answer, I'm not a cosplayer, so my example questions probably won't be perfect. Commented Jan 27, 2012 at 4:47
