Proposal: Sports

I honestly don't understand how we don't have more commitments already :)

I am so excited about this that I check the commitment levels almost everyday even as they stay completely unchanged for weeks on end. I honestly think that if this site reached beta that I may never work again because I would be on here non-stop. LOL

The problem is, I know there are more people like me out there, so how do we get them on board? I would love to advertise if I had something to advertise with because I attend at least 1-2 sporting events every week.

  • I'm not sure if this sentiment applies to others, but I'm not convinced this is a good fit for the Q&A format. The "sports fan" side seems more suited for a discussion forum. Even sports statistics would only work if they went beyond trivia into sports analytics (which I think is well-suited for Q&A). However, as much as I love sports analytics, I feel it's probably too much of a niche topic for SE at this time. Jan 16, 2012 at 19:18

@MichaelMcGowan Yes, I know what you mean, but I think that it could be great with the right kind of moderation. For instance, I was just trying to find the rules on zone defense in the NBA and I had to resort to using "Yahoo! Answers". Every time that happens I wish there was a Sports SE. But this would definitely not be suited for statistical trivia or banter between fans which could prove difficult to moderate. Jan 16, 2012 at 20:02

If you have a blog, website, or other personal venue you could advertise it there.

You could share it on your social network of choice, FB, G+, etc...

If you have a lot of followers you could tweet it.

But it revolves around the members themselves to advertise it. I don't think it would be appropriate for Stack Exchange itself to do something about it, as that's just not part of their model. Community driven is their model, and it works well.

In all honesty, the proposal has had a rough time even getting to the commitment stage because so many wanted them to be separate proposals (for a very very long time). Getting some of those guys on board would be an easy way to get a couple dozen, but that's not going to get us them all.

The bottom line is it takes personal initiative. We only need 145 more people (and 63 of them need 200+ rep on another SE site...)

Cross posting on other forums?

Talking about it at sports events: tailgates, etc.
