Proposal: Bitcoin & Crypto-currency

The Bitcoin & Crypto-currency proposal has been gaining commitments rapidly recently due to promotion on the Bitcoin forums. However, the overwhelming majority of these are new users with little or no reputation on existing Stack Exchange sites. We need a total of 100 commitments from users with 200 or more reputation elsewhere.

How can we promote this proposal to established Stack Exchange users, either within the Bitcoin community or otherwise?

200 actually isn't that much rep. From what I've seen over a few dozen proposals, it's much easier for existing committers to get to 200 than to try to get already-established users to join.

Some actual numbers:

  • 150 people are committed (out of the 200 required).
  • 56 committers (37%) have 200+ rep (out of the 100 required).

This means that:

  • Of the 150 people currently committed, 94 have <200 rep.
  • 50 more people need to commit to this proposal.

To fulfill the active user requirement, out of 144 people (94 current + 50 needed), 44 need to have 200+ rep. Rather than trying to get 88% (44/50) of the new users to have 200+, just try to get another 31% (44/144) of all committers over 200.

Chris, you yourself have >300 on both SO and SU, and I see that there are also a number of people committed who are on the way there. Great!

And for the rest of you, with 60-some sites on a wide variety of topics, there's bound to be at least one you know something abut or want to know something about—so please make the effort!

    I'm starting to take this approach with my promotion efforts, but I'm also hoping that my fellow Bitcoiners might have some good suggestions here.

    +1 to this. I've been a StackOverflow user for quite a while but haven't really done much there, so I'm at 107. It should be pretty easy for me to get over 200 this weekend and if that's what it takes to push this forward then that's exactly what I'll do.

    I think you're on to something here... I've read a decent amount of these sites for a while, but never really been a contributor. I think it's time I go looking for ways I can help contribute to get over 200 rep to help this out.

    Sorry for the "me too" reply, but that's exactly what I did. A few hours of answering questions got me to 200 rep on three stackexchange sites, and the questions were interesting and fun to answer anyway.

We also just need promotion in general. Are any of our committed userbase the ops of one or more popular bitcoin sites that they could publish a story or link about SE on? Have we added ourselves to the Wiki yet?

I suggested that Bitcoin SE be added to Reddit's sidebar of recommended links. The idea was that Reddit's /r/bitcoin area was for discussion of Bitcoin related news, whereas Bitcoin SE would be a better choice for getting answers to questions about Bitcoin. It took awhile, but the link to Bitcoin SE was added a few weeks ago.

It would be great if there were other sites devoted to Bitcoin that would allow external links i.e. to Bitcoin SE. Maybe give that a try?
