I triggered a reputation recalc, and the reputation passed from 502 to 407. Why is there that difference?

There's any number of things that can cause that.
Most commonly, though, it happens when a person gets on and off topic votes for example questions on a proposal, and the proposal is subsequently closed.

That would explain a difference of 50, which is caused by 10 votes I got for an example question for Free open source software projects, which is closed.– apadernoCommented May 2, 2011 at 5:43
