Amateur Built and Experimental Aircraft form HUGE part of aviation today. Topics relevant to these would include R&D, licensing, operation, building, safety, design, modification, flight testing, certification, etc

These types of questions could form a large part of the sites activity.

Should these types of questions be acceptable for this site

There was a previous discussion on the naming and scope of this proposal. A number of people felt that R&D, building, design, certification etc would be covered by other engineering Q&A sites, or a dedicated Aerospace engineering site. I'd rather see a combined operational and technical site, as there is much value in having both kinds of expertise here.

Amateur Built and Experimental Aircraft is a nice example of a field that combines the technical and the operational together. With the right set of tags, this should be a valuable addition to this site.

  • I concur that amateur built and experimental would be a valuable addition. I foresee a lot of quadcopter/UAV questions and answers as well. We should definitely have tags for UAVs.

I think this site would be the best candidate for these kinds of questions, since:

  • Physics.SE is too general (core physics)
  • no similar engineering site exists yet in the SE network

    I agree, during the earlier discussion about the scope of this site people suggest that engineering related aviation question should be answered in a Aerospace Engineering Q&A site. I started the proposal phase for such a site but unfortunately it died due to lack of interest. For now I think it's ok to have engineering related questions here, if it generates enough mass there is always the opportunity of relaunching the Aerospace engineering site.

  • Unlike other fields, the two ends of things are actually more closely intertwined with one another than (say) car driving -- while very few people make their own cars and drive them on the street, there are tons of people who make experimental aircraft. Aviation requires more knowledge of how the respective parts work and I'd think that this difference serves as the key between this proposal and others.
